Education Meetings in Tallahassee – January 20 – 24, 2025

Monday, January 20th is the federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It also happens to be Innauguration Day in D.C. Committees in Tallahassee will meet Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for the opening of the 2025 legislative session (on March 4, 2025). Although there are no bills on this week’s agendas, early committee week agendas are often designed to inform committee members on the topics the committee intends to address in the upcoming session.

The Florida House

These are the scheduled meetings of House Education committees next week. The House Education & Employment Committee, again, is not scheduled to meet.

  • Discussion on preparing and supporting teachers to meet the academic needs of students.

Meeting Overview/Summary:

  • State and local perspectives of implementing key programs of Florida’s K-12 system.
  • Panel discussions on state and local coordination of school safety and the statewide early warning system.

Florida Senate

Both Senate Education committees are scheduleed to meet.

Wednesday January 22, 2025

11am – 1pm Senate Education Pre-K – 12

Location: Pat Thomas Committee Room, 412 Knott Building

Agenda:

  • Presentations from the Executive Directors of the Heartland Educational Consortium, North East Florida Educational Consortium, and Panhandle Area Educational Consortium on Rural School Districts and Consortia Services
  • Panel Discussion by Rural School District Superintendents

When Senator Ben Albritton took the role of Senate President he promised a “Rural Renaissance” during this legislative term. Albritton described himself as “a proud son of rural Florida, Florida’s Heartland, six generations deep” and vowed to ensure rural communties “have access to all the opportunities the rest of Florida has to offer.” Rural school districts have specific challenges and it looks like the Florida Senate may be planning to tackle some of them.
