An Inauspicious Start to Deregulation

Yesterday, the Senate Education PreK-12 committee held a “Workshop on Recommendations to Reduce Regulations on Public Schools.” It was scheduled to last 2 hours. It lasted 37 minutes.

Here is a summary of what transpired:

Nothing.

Sure, Senators Calatayud, Hutson and Simon read their proposals and the FLDOE’s Senior Chancellor, Adam Miller, gave a prepared presentation. But there were NO questions. No suggestions for additions. No discussion. No statements of support.

Nothing.

Next week, the same committee is scheduled to present three “proposed committee bills” at their 11/15/23 meeting.

Apologies to former Senator Montford, who addressed the committee about the importance of deregulation for over 3 minutes at the beginning of the meeting and to the single public commenter, a teacher who encouraged the deregulation discussion. Their efforts were not “nothing.”

11//8/23 ADDENDUM:

Unlike their Senate counterparts, the House Education Quality subcommittee was actively engaged in the deregulation discussion in their meeting today. You can read this Twitter thread for a summary or watch the meeting here.
