Committee Week 6: School Choice, Funding Requests and Term Limits

This week is Interim Committee Week #6 (Feb 18-22). Monday is the Presidents’ Day Holiday and several education committees will not be meeting this week. Still, there are a few things to watch.

The Governor’s Budget Implementing Bill was released on Friday and is on the House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee. Also expecting discussion of his new school voucher program in the House Education Committee.

Here’s what the legislature has scheduled for us:

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

11:00 a.m. House Education

  • Presentation and panel discussion on school choice. This will, likely, be the first open legislative discussion regarding Governor DeSantis’ proposed Equal Opportunity Scholarship, funded by local property taxes through the FEFP
Wednesday, February 20, 2019

8:30 a.m. House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee

  • Overview of Governor’s Fiscal Year 2019-2020 Education Proposals
  • Hearing a bunch of local appropriations request bills.

9:00 a.m. Oversight, Transparency and Public Management Subcommittee

10:00 a.m. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education

  • Presentations of Education Local Funding Initiative Requests for Fiscal Year 2019-2020
Not scheduled to meet this week:
  • Senate Education Committee
  • House PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee
  • House PreK-12 Quality Subcommittee

Once again, if you value public schools, this year will be an especially good year to speak out in their support. As always, if you can’t be there in person, you can watch these meetings live streamed on The Florida Channel.

Stay informed and call out the accountabaloney when you smell it.
